Webcast Session I: Introduction and Overview

The following webcast presents an introduction and overview of the New York State Regents Examination in English Language Arts (Common Core) and provides important information regarding the test’s purpose, design, and content. This session explains how the test reflects the shifts in student learning required by the Common Core Learning Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy. The session also presents the test blueprint and discusses the three test parts.

Webcast Session II: Part 1—Reading Comprehension

The following webcast focuses on Part 1: Reading Comprehension. This session will briefly review the text selection process, explain the process by which multiple-choice questions are constructed, and provide sample multiple-choice questions similar to those that will be found on the test. Each sample question is accompanied by a commentary explaining the key and the incorrect options.

Webcast Session III: Part 2—Writing from Sources: Argument

The following PowerPoint provides critical information to educators for scoring the Part 2– Writing from Sources: Argument part of the Regents Examination in English Language Arts (Common Core). During this session, teachers will have the opportunity to learn about the Part 2 blueprint, review a sample task and texts, learn how to use the rubric, and review a set of sample essay responses. Teachers will also have the opportunity to practice scoring sample essays and to review the scoring rationale provided with each essay.

To participate in this session, teachers will need to download the Part 2 PowerPoint presentation. Please choose a version of the presentation that is compatible with your computer:

You will also need a copy of the Part 2 Teacher’s Packet that is posted with this webcast. The packet includes the Part 2 Sample Task and Sample Texts, the Part 2 Rubric, and both the Anchor Set Papers and Practice Set Papers with annotations.

The following PowerPoint presentation provides critical information to educators for scoring the Part 3—Text Analysis: Exposition part of the Regents Examination in English Language Arts (Common Core). During this session, teachers will have the opportunity to learn about the Part 3 blueprint, review a sample task and text, learn how to use the rubric, and review a set of sample student responses. Teachers will also have the opportunity to practice scoring sample responses and to review the scoring rationale provided with each response.
