Session 6: Quality Implementation - Supporting All Learners in the Listening and Learning Strand

Participants will consider ways that Listening and Learning lessons can be made to work for all students in their classroom.

A Toolkit Frameworks will be presented to guide teachers in considering various types of instructional adjustments that can occur when conducting Listening and Learning lessons and exemplars of such adjustments will be shown through the Supplemental Guide (a teacher support within CKLA for supporting the needs of diverse students). With the expertise of Rebecca Freeman Field, a particular emphasis will be given to instructional adaptions that are beneficial for ELL students.

In this session:

  1. Participants will be able to identify various ways that Listening and Learning lessons may be adjusted to support the varied needs of students in their classroom;
  2. Participants will be able to articulate strategies that are critical to consider when making instructional adjustments for ELL students, in particular;
  3. Participants will be able to identify the purpose of the Supplemental Guide as a tool/resource within CKLA; and
  4. Participants will apply aspects of the instructional Toolkit when practicing a sample Listening and Learning lesson.

Session 7: The Skills Strand - Understanding Synthetic Phonics

The goal of this session is to help participants understand the underlying philosophy of CKLA’s Skills strand as taking a “sound-first” approach to learning the code of English. In this session:

  1. Participants will be able to define synthetic phonics; and
  2. Participants will be able to articulate at least one way that synthetic phonics supports children’s reading acquisition.

Session 8: Understanding the Design Principles of the Skills Strand

The purpose of this session is to support participants in making connections between the idea of synthetic phonics and the instructional design and key instructional features of CKLA’s Skills strand. Synthetic phonics is a systematic approach that emphasizes individual phonemes and oral language skills as underlying strong decoding. Instructional features of CKLA are highlighted to illustrate four specific design principles:

  1. CKLA makes the complex relationship between sounds and spellings explicit.
  2. CKLA gives intensive attention to the oral language skills (blending/segmenting) which underlie strong reading and writing.
  3. CKLA gives intensive practice in distinguishing sounds that are auditorily similar.
  4. CKLA teaches the most frequent and least ambiguous sounds first.

In this session:

  1. Participants will be able to recognize and explain the four design principles underlying Skills.
  2. Participants will be able to connect aspects of the Skills lessons to the various design principles.

Session 9: Bringing It Together: A Walk through a Skills Lesson

This session will pull out key ideas from the morning and present the full view of a sample Skills lesson, annotating it for the key design principles. In this session:

  1. Participants will be able to draw explicit connections between the design principles within the Skills strand and the lesson plans.
  2. Participants will create a plan of action to help them get started in their adoption/turnkey efforts.
