Prekindergarten ELA

This training assumes general prior knowledge about CKLA, but no prior knowledge of CKLA-Pre-K. For schools or teachers who are interested in knowing more about CKLA-Pre-K prior to the training, see the CKLA-Pre-K Overview webinar at: http://www.engageny.org/resource/ckla-prek-overview-webinar

Bring to training:

To facilitate the training activities, we request that participants bring their own copies of:

Additionally, we request that each participant bring a copy of their personal classroom daily schedule (if they are a Pre-K educator) or a representative classroom daily schedule (if they are an administrator overseeing multiple classrooms).

Grades K-2 ELA

This training assumes general prior knowledge about CKLA and the Listening and Learning strand and is not appropriate for someone who is not yet implementing the program. For schools or teachers who are interested in knowing more about Core Knowledge, there are prior training modules posted on EngageNY.org that provide this general support. (See http://www.engageny.org/resource/professional-development-turnkey-kit-ela-p-2-overview for modules of training, on-demand webinars, etc.) It is recommended that anyone new to Core Knowledge look over the material on the program prior to attending this training.

Bring to training:

To facilitate the training activities, we request that participants bring two anthologies- Domain 2 and Domain 4- from your grade-band (select a grade-band if you support various grades). The Listening and Learning Domains for each grade are listed below:

Additionally we request that participants bring an ‘artifact’ that represents a lesson or ‘success’ related to their implementation of Listening and Learning. An artifact could include a single piece of student work that demonstrates a success (name removed), a center activity you built, a lesson plan that shows an enhancement/adaption to the L&L program, a picture of a set-up of a classroom (taken from your classroom or one you observed), a quote or anecdote that reflects the learning and change in your district/school/classroom, etc. Please be sure to remove any identifying information if you bring student work. Copies are recommended as we will be asking you to share/use this work in an activity; however, we are not formally collecting these artifacts.

Grades 3-8 ELA

Bring to training:

Copies of the Common Core Speaking and Listening Standards either pre-downloaded or in hard copy.

Grades 9-12 ELA

Read the following texts:

  1. St Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, by Karen Russell
  2. Letter 1 from Letters to a Young Poet, by Ranier Maria Rilke

For teachers who have tried pieces of the module, we’d like them to bring 3 samples of student writing to talk about.
