Kindergarten ELA Skills Strand: Ancillary Components

Kindergarten: Skills Sound Cards
These Sound Cards will be used in conjunction with the Sound Posters in Units 3–5, 7–8, and 10 of the Kindergarten Skills strand, as indicated in each of these units’ respective Teacher Guides. The Sound Cards represent the spellings that stand for sounds. The Sound Cards should be posted to the empty boxes under the target sound on the Sound Posters as spellings are taught. As you teach the lessons in the program you will be continually affixing Sound Posters and Sound Cards to your walls. When you complete the entire kindergarten program, you will have displayed 51 sound cards with their appropriate target sounds on Sound Posters. Each time a new letter-sound correspondence is taught, the Teacher Guide will remind you to display the Sound Poster and the Sound Card.

Kindergarten: Skills Sound Posters
These Sound Posters will be used in conjunction with the Sound Cards in Units 3–5, 7–8, and 10 of the Kindergarten Skills strand, as indicated in each of these units’ respective Teacher Guides. The Sound Posters are intended to be posted on the walls of the classroom as you teach letter-sound correspondences. They provide a visual reminder of the code knowledge students have been taught, and are a very useful reference for spelling and writing. Each poster has a target sound printed in a speech bubble at the top of the poster, and one box for each spelling taught in kindergarten. These boxes will be filled with Sound Cards, which each represent a spelling for the target sound. As you teach the lessons in the program you will be continually affixing Sound Posters and Sound Cards to your walls. When you complete the entire kindergarten program, you will have displayed 10 vowel posters and 25 consonant posters. Each time a new letter-sound correspondence is taught, the Teacher Guide will remind you to display the Sound Poster and the Sound Card.

Kindergarten: Skills Chaining Folder
Each student will use a Student Chaining Folder, in conjunction with a set of Small Letter Cards in Units 5–7 of the Kindergarten Skills strand, to practice spelling words as indicated in each of these units’ respective Teacher Guides. Students will arrange Small Letter Cards on their Chaining Folders. When using the chaining folders, you will ask students to spell a word on their Chaining Folders, check their work, spell the word on your pocket chart, and have students practice procedures to check spelling accuracy.

Kindergarten: Skills Small Letter Card Set
Each student will use a Small Letter Card Set in conjunction with a Chaining Folder, in Units 5–7 of the Kindergarten Skills strand, to practice spelling words as indicated in each of these units’ respective Teacher Guides. Students will arrange Small Letter Cards on their Chaining Folders. When using the chaining folders, you will ask students to spell a word on their Chaining Folders, check their work, spell the word on your pocket chart, and have students practice procedures to check spelling accuracy.

Kindergarten: Skills Large Letter Card Set
The Large Letter Card Set will be used in Units 3–10 of the Kindergarten Skills strand, for Large Card chaining exercises as indicated in each of these units’ respective Teacher Guides. In Large Card Chaining, each student is given a single Large Card with a single- or multi-letter spelling printed on it. The teacher says a word and students arrange themselves to spell the word. This helps students to practice phonemic spelling while offering students the opportunity to move around. By the end of kindergarten, students will have practiced chaining using 42 different Large Cards.

Kindergarten: Skills Blending Picture Cards
The Blending Picture Cards, consisting of 40 color pictures of objects and items, are used exclusively in Unit 2 of the Kindergarten Skills strand. The pictures can be used as visual cues to help students blend names of objects and items. These names consist of either two or three sounds and are therefore suitable for early blending practice.
