HSE Social Studies: Unit Descriptions and Lesson Plans

students studying together

These six Social Studies/ELA lessons introduce students to early U.S. history, integrating key historic, economic, and civics topics with literacy activities.  Students are introduced to colonialism, mercantilism, and Enlightenment ideas underlying U.S. seminal documents as well as factors driving westward expansion in the 1800s.  Practice in reading a variety of text types--maps, graphs, primary sources, political cartoons, and informational texts is provided in the context of learning the history content, and writing skills such as sentence combining and essay writing are incrementally developed as the lessons progress.
