HSE Social Studies: Lesson Plan 5

happy students working together

The lesson focuses on the government--forms of government around the world--and the structure of the US government.  The lesson begins with a review of the world map.  Students identify key countries, read about their governments, then match the form of government to the term for it (i.e. dictatorship; monarchy).  The lesson then moves to the three-branch system of the U.S. government.  Students read about the powers of each branch and the checks and balances system, then summarize short articles that show the checks in action..  The lesson finishes with a pro/con essay on tenure for Supreme Court judges, using source texts as models for the structure of an argumentative essay.  There is a final mini-lesson to introduce dependent clauses as another way to combine sentences.
