Students review a timeline of US history so that they can place what they are learning about the colonial period in a larger context. They then read about triangular trade, linking it to the economy of the Southern colonies, reviewed in the previous lesson, and the practice of mercantilism. The focus then moves from nonfiction textbook excerpts to poetry. Students read a poem about the history of slavery by Margaret Walker and practice strategies for comprehending poetry such as noticing images and key words. The previous lesson’s mini-lesson on the requirements of a sentence is followed up by a mini-lesson which introduces students to a simple structure for combining sentences: commas in a series.
