In the first lesson of this unit, students will continue to build the close reading skills they began to develop in Unit 1 as they analyze Letter One of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. In this letter, Rilke responds to a young poet’s search for guidance. In the excerpt that students will close read in this lesson, Rilke challenges the usefulness of criticism and comments on the intangible and inexpressible nature of art. Students will begin to understand the connections Rilke is establishing and developing in this section.
