Grade 7 ELA Module 2A, Unit 2, Lesson 3

Students discussing their reading assignment in class.

In this lesson, students explore how unions can be agents of change. After learning about the problems faced by the farmworkers in Lesson 2, students learn how Chávez organized the UFW.
• Students will also learn to analyze not just what Chávez says but also how he says it. They will learn some basic tools of rhetoric that speakers use to develop their claims. In the interest of time, these lessons focus on having students identify a set of tools and consider how the use of these tools helps Chávez develop his claim.
