Grade 3 ELA Key Details in a Non Fiction Text

This English Language Arts Common Core video features third grade students from John F Kennedy Intermediate School in Deer Park, NY. The lesson focuses on standard RI 3.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea. After noticing that her students were only recounting surface details of science and social studies texts, the teacher in this video adjusted her teaching to incorporate more close reading into her lessons. The teacher models close reading for her students to show how to find gist, new vocabulary words, and key details. The students then closely read the informational text to practice synthesizing the key details to get deeper understanding of the text. These third graders are also able to identify author's purpose in writing a text as they discover the main idea and key details.
