The decodable Reader for Unit 5 is "Sir Gus." It is a fictional reader detailing the serendipitous undertakings of Sir Gus, one of King Alfred's knights. In the Reader lessons for this unit, you will notice a decrease in the number of individual words and spellings reviewed in isolation for decoding purposes immediately before students read the story. This decrease is intentional and represents a very gradual process in which students will assume increasing responsibility and independence in reading texts.
