Grade 12 ELA Module 1, Unit 1, Lesson 11

Girl Reading

In this lesson, students read and analyze chapter 10 of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, pages 165–171 (from “‘The true knowledge’ reconstructed much more briefly than I received it” to “into which any religious faker could step and mislead our people”). In this chapter, Malcolm X is placed in jail and rebels against his imprisonment. His family members visit and share with him information about a man named Elijah Muhammad, which changes his life. Students pay close attention to the structural choices the author makes in this section.
