In this lesson, students engage in an evidence collection activity using The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in order to prepare for a discussion in the following lesson about the text’s various claims and evidence. The focus of this lesson is on understanding claims and evidence in informational text, as well as developing claims for future argument writing. Additionally, this lesson develops students’ proficiency for gathering and synthesizing evidence from a text.
