In this lesson, students read and analyze paragraphs 12–15 of “A Genetics of Justice” in which Alvarez describes her mother’s forced participation in a parade of women honoring Trujillo. Students explore how Alvarez develops central ideas of trauma and freedom through her recreated version of her mother’s experiences.
