Session 1: Stories from the Field

In this session, participants will hear from panel members from CKLA pilot schools will share their experiences working with CKLA. From this panel, participants will be able to:

  1. Consider and reflect upon what they have heard regarding the need for strategies for leadership support during CKLA–NY implementation; and
  2. Consider and reflect upon what they have heard regarding the ways CKLA–NY supports diverse learners.

Session 2: Scheduling

In this session, participants will hear from panel members from CKLA pilot schools will share their experiences working with CKLA. From this panel, participants will be able to:

  1. Consider and reflect on roadblocks and possible solutions when scheduling CKLA–NY; and
  2. Create a schedule of their own using the provided template, sample schedules, the shared expertise of panelists, and their individual planning constraints (such as prep blocks, resource blocks, etc.).

Sessions 3 and 4: Demo Around the Room

In these sessions, participants will participate in both a Listening and Learning or Skills strand demonstration. From this demonstration, participants will be able to:

  1. Consider and reflect upon the materials used in Skills or Listening and Learning;
  2. Consider and reflect upon their ability to use these materials; and
  3. Assess their current capacity to instruct students in the Listening and Learning and Skills strands, and how to improve upon their current understanding.

Session 5: Daily Debrief

In this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Reflect upon Day One sessions holistically;
  2. Write down what they noticed during the demonstrations, including questions, concerns, and take aways;
  3. Consider what they noticed in terms of the ways the facilitators took lessons and made them "come alive" through their own expertise, skills, and techniques; and
  4. Categorize their implementation to dos according to the following categories: high impact/low effort, high impact/high effort, low impact/low effort, and low impact/high effort.

Session 6: How Do Reading and Writing Work Together?

In this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand and use the See, Think, Connect protocol to examine student work as a group and individually; and
  2. Use the See, Think, Connect protocol to understand better how reading and writing work together in CKLA–NY.

Session 7: How Is Writing Explicitly Taught within CKLA–NY?

In this session, participants will engage in a Domino Share activity in order to be able to:

  1. Consider and reflect on how grammar, spelling, handwriting, and content knowledge factor into the teaching of writing within CKLA–NY;
  2. Understand and use CKLA–NY materials to aid student understanding of grammar, spelling, handwriting, and content knowledge and to inform writing skills;
  3. Assess students using appropriate assessments provided in the CKLA–NY program; and 4. Use student assessment analyses to inform instruction.

Session 8: How Does CKLA–NY Support the Writing Process?

In this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify how CKLA–NY supports the writing process;
  2. Identify, employ, and reflect upon the three-step writing process;
  3. Identify and plan for the introduction to a wide variety of text types in CKLA–NY; 4. Identify and reflect up on the five features of teaching writing with CKLA–NY; and
  4. Write down their impressions of writing within the CKLA–NY program, including questions, connections, and take aways.

Session 9: CKLA, Writing, and the Common Core Standards

In this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify how CKLA–NY is aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards;
  2. Discuss and reflect upon the language of the Common Core Learning Standards with respect to the methods of CKLA–NY;
  3. Examine how writing samples from CKLA–NY in kindergarten and grades one and two correspond with CCLS, respectively; and
  4. Reflect upon the questions of themselves and other participants during an office hours period.
