December 2014 NTI: Understanding Text Complexity: Grades 3-8

Students working in classroom

David Abel, Fellow of ELA Curriculum and Assessment, Regents Research Fund

This session will provide a “look under the hood” of text complexity, including an examination of quantitative measures and the utility of quantitative measures; using a qualitative text complexity rubric to understand how complexity functions for students; and the unintended consequences of “just right” texts for students.

Participants can use the information, rubrics, and text packet for their turnkey professional development sessions on text complexity and/or to help inform decisions being made about reading and content at the building or district level.
