A Portrait of a District Getting Smarter about the Core Webster Central School District

The Webster Central School District is getting smarter about the Common Core. This district prioritized several key action steps to inform and provide professional development to all of their educators around Common Core implementation. In 2011, the Superintendent of Webster Central Schools, Adele Bovard, together with her team, developed and implemented a thoughtful plan with urgency so that the district's students would benefit from Common Core instruction right away.

To make this possible the district leadership:

  • Created opportunities for all educators to unpack the Common Core and Instructional Shifts
  • Provided principal-led and teacher-led training for all 700 principals and teachers, respectively, which led to a common language in the district around the Instructional Shifts
  • Built effective teaching teams in each building made-up of administrators and teachers
  • Asked teachers to connect the instructional shifts to their daily practice and used the shifts in teacher observation and feedback
  • Turn-keyed learning from the Network Team Institutes in Albany (including, for example, trainings on "close reading" and "math talk")
  • Strategically assembled classroom libraries that were appropriate grade level complexity and a balance of fiction and non-fiction
  • Embedded PD in classrooms and teacher teams
  • Used EngageNY.org to build model units in collaborative teacher/ district specialist teams which were posted on the Webster Central Schools website
