Common Core Instruction: Developing a Claim Comparing the Themes of Two Poems

This ELA Common Core lesson features eighth grade students from Unadilla Valley Central School in New Berlin, NY. The lesson focuses on ELA Standards RL.8.5 and RL.8.6. In pairs, students compare the themes of two poems they have read several times, develop claims and cite evidence to support their claims. Teacher Julie Koster models effective questioning in order to push her students' thinking.

Common Core Instruction: Developing a Claim Using Two Informational Texts

This ELA Common Core lesson features seventh grade students from Unadilla Valley Central School in New Berlin, NY. The lesson focuses on ELA Standards RI.7.1, RI.7.9, and W.7.1, Students work in pairs and individually to analyze two rigorous informational texts in order to make a claim about the power of information. Teacher Stacey Brotherton has high expectations for her students and consistently gives them constructive feedback throughout the lesson.

Common Core Instruction: Exploring Dividing Decimals to the Hundredths

This Mathematics Common Core lesson features fifth grade students from LP Quinn Elementary School in Tupper Lake, NY. The lesson focuses on Math Standard NBT.7 Divide decimals by single-digit whole numbers involving easily identifiable multiples using place value understanding and relate to a written method. Students explore dividing decimals to the hundredths in small groups using a carousel protocol and persevere through challenging problem solving. The teacher, Michelle Kendall, facilitates the small group discussions and allows students to think deeply and draw conclusions together.

LewisDon't judge…we’ve all been there. We run out to our car only to realize that the windows are covered in frost. As we slowly back out of the driveway, we can start to see the beginnings of the defroster kicking in so we become encouraged, only to look again and realize that we can’t clearly make out the world in front of us, therefore becoming nervous and anxious about the ride ahead.
