This document provides an overview of the 'scope and sequence' of the P-2 ELA training. It reflects the instructional pathway for a school beginning implementation/adoption of CKLA. Each module described includes 1-2 days worth of training. To understand the specifics of any one Module, please see that Module's Turnkey Kit. The Turnkey Kit for any one Module will specify Session-by-Session details about that training module and will show you how to link to all materials needed for that training.

K-2 CKLA Overview

This orients participants to the CKLA K-2 program and the research-base and rationale for its design. This module also provides a condensed overview for use with parents. It is approximately four sessions/5 hours of training.

Getting Started with PreK CKLA

This training module is designed to help participants ‘get started’ implementing the CKLA-Preschool program. The training helps participants become familiar with the three parts of the CKLA-Preschool program: Starting the Day, Skills Small Groups, and Listening and Learning. This module builds participants’ understanding of the various routines, instructional techniques, and materials involved in these curricular components. This training was originally designed as a 2-day training and includes 8 sessions and approximately 10 hours of training.

Getting Started with K-2 Listening and Learning

This training orients participants to the Listening and Learning strand and provides a deep look at the lesson structure and critical instructional features. It is designed to prepare participants to begin use of the Listening and Learning strand with quality and fidelity. It involves 3 sessions and approximately 5 hours of training.

Getting Started with the K-2 Skills Strand

This orients participants to the design of the Skills strand and the research-base and rationale for it's design. It involves 3 sessions (one of them being a demonstration of a sample lesson) and involves approximately 3 hours of training. This module is not considered sufficient for beginning use of the Skills strand, but provides an important baseline of information upon which Modules 4 and 5 build.

The Skills Strand in Depth

This module supports participants in beginning implementation of the Skills strand. It provides an in-depth look at lesson types and supports teachers in planning for a high-quality implementation. This module includes sample videos from a master teacher, as well as tools for planning and observing various lesson types. This module includes approximately 5 hours of training.

Training Module 5

Assessment, Grouping, and Differentiation in the Skills Strand

This module orients participants to the placement assessments/procedures built into the CKLA Skills strand through the use of case studies. This module builds upon single case studies to consider classrooms of data and options for using CKLA-specific data for grouping, placement, and pacing of the program. This module involves approximately 5 hours of training.

Training Module 6

Supporting High Quality Listening and Learning Implementation

This module is designed for participants who are using the Listening and Learning strand and are seeking to improve their comfort with the program and the quality of their implementation. This training organizes around a model of high quality implementation that emphasizes the value of the teacher-text connections, student-text connections, and teacher-student interactions. This training was originally done as a one-day training and involves approximately 7 hours of training.

Training Module 7

Teaching and Learning in CKLA: Examining the Evidence

This module is designed for K-2 participants using the CKLA program. This module offers some sessions for all participants, as well as sessions specific to principals/instructional leaders or teachers. An emphasis is placed on using evidence from the curricula in formative ways for a deepened understanding of student learning, teaching and implementation, and outreach around students and the classroom. A co-developer of the training in this module is Dr. Rhonda Bondie, an assistant professor of special education at Fordham University in NYC.

This training was originally done as a one-day training and involves approximately 9 hours of training.
